Envirothon
GACDS is a sponsor of the Georgia Envirothon, an environmental education program that provides high school students with hands on, science based training in natural resources and ecology topics. In addition to our sponsorship at the state level, many conservation districts sponsor local teams. Teams compete at one-day regional events in March, with the top four teams from each region advancing to the state competition in April. The statewide winner goes to the Canon Envirothon during the summer to compete against other teams from the U.S. and Canada.
This year's state-level competition will be held at Flinchum's Phoenix (UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources) in Athens, Ga.
The Georgia Envirothon evaluates students' performance at the following training stations: soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and the current environmental issue for 2012: nonpoint source pollution / low impact design.
Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored teams in 2011:
- Clayton County
- Henry County
- West Georgia
Congratulations to the Stephens County Red Team, winner of the 2011 State Envirothon! The team represented Georgia at the Canon Envirothon in Canada, placing 28th.
